Online socialising networks

These are used by people who like talking to others over the internet, there are lots and lots of adverts, there are also links to other pages that allows the person to log on and talk about films and write reviews about them telling others how good they think the film is.

Example: Face book

An example of this is ‘Disney’s A Christmas Carol’, this is a 2009 film and it is on social networks letting people write their own reviews and they don’t have to know anything about the terms as it allows anyone to write a review about it. The down side with this is that people can give it bad reviews and they may not have even seen it, this will put some people off of the film

Example: Disney’s A Christmas Carol

1. Logistics of the film

The company that supplies the film to the dispatcher will need to meet the legal requirements. The film that the company has made is transported via lorry/ van to the cinema that has borrowed the film off of the film owners, the film is transported because the film is printed, this means that the film is a big, heavy object and this means manual labour is needed to transport it to place to place. The prints are very expensive to make, as a result the low budget films can only afford to buy and make around 10 prints (e.g. Dead Man’s Shoes), on the other hand the higher budget films can buy around 1000 prints (e.g. Harry Potter), the cost of a standard print is around £1000, but if a subtitled one is needed then the cost is £2000. The film: This is England and its makers were given a grant by the national lottery of almost £90k, this meant that they could buy more prints for the film and they purchased a further 20 more on top of their 10 prints before they were given the grant, this meant that the film was shown in more cinemas and as a result it was a successful film and it was watched by more viewers. The film prints can get damaged on the delivery, so the company send two of the prints to the cinema in case one of them is damaged/ broken on the way there.

2. Licensing

The company that make the films and then put them on prints sell them to the dispatchers and then the dispatchers rent that film out to the cinemas. But first the company need to send the film off to the regulatory body to give the right to show the movie and they put an age rating on that film depending on all of the violence, sexual scenes, language and so on... the age ratings are (U, PG, 12, 15 and 18) these are all of the age categories that films have with U being suitable for anyone and 18 being suitable for people equal to or over the age of 18 only. When the movie is shown in the cinemas the distributer gets paid every time that movie is shown, but the distributer then has to pay the production / the makers of the film some of that money. In the world there is 90 different territories for the films, the smaller independent companies will only send their movies out to 1 of the 90 territories and this usually tends to be at local destinations like in the UK, but the larger international companies send the films to all of the territories.

3. Prints and advertising

The different sized companies send different amounts of prints out to the cinemas and they also make different advertising techniques and categories. The smaller companies would produce around 10 prints and the marketing would be below the line advertising, this is advertising like: on the TV, on the internet, and in magazines, this sort of marketing is where the audience will have to look for the advert themselves and it reduces the chance of them hearing of that film, but the smaller companies usually use the method of recommendation, this cuts the advertising cost down by lots. The medium company would make around 200 prints and they would use all of the advertising methods in below the line advertising and they would also use some of the above the line advertising like billboards, posters and so on... finally the larger companies would make around 1000 prints and they would use all of the marketing methods in both above and below the line advertising. When the film is sent to the cinema there is the print and the trailers of the film (this is when they are renting the film) the posters that are made to advertise the film are on average size of 30X40 in the UK. The advertising is used in every way possible like being on busses, billboards, escalators, buildings and so on... when the film is being released there may sometimes be two films with the same genre, this means that the cinema will select the film that has a higher budget, also the film will need to have a sensible time to be shown like prime time. Almost 50% of the films budget will go on advertising. The trailers need to make the movie look good and they will also need to create the mystery, tease the audience and display the release date.

4. Digital distribution

There is a method for films that is using a digital format, this method has many advantages and it has some disadvantages. The advantages are: the film won’t have to be delivered, the film won’t get damaged, it costs a lot less, it can be downloaded which means it will be cheaper to watch and buy, cuts down piracy/ copying of the films, able to make more e.g. one for every cinema in the world, cheaper to send and so on... the disadvantages are: cuts out the middle man meaning lots of people are out of a job, the cinemas won’t have many people watching the films because it is cheaper to download, the films are compressed which means the quality of the picture is not as good, the sound quality is affected and so on... this scheme is a large scale in Brazil and China.

5. Film making

The films that have been made are released within certain days of the week, this is to make the audience watch the film more times and it will also increase the interest in the film. Most of the films are release on a Friday, this is because most of the other films are released during the week and this will increase the chance of people watching the film, also it is the end of the week, this means that it is the beginning of the weekend so this will also attract more of an audience. On average there are 10 films that are released every week. When the company that have made the film have received the information of the release date they can then start to make the marketing e.g. trailers and posters.

film analysing

The Boat That Rocked

The film that is called The Boat That Rocked is made and published by Working Title. The Daily Telegraph credited the film with "some magical moments," but called it "muddled" and then criticized its length, this is a review / opinion on the film, there has been marketing on this film and some of it would above the line advertising, this means that there would be posters, trailers and so on... There is viral marketing, but that will be on the Working Title website and it may only be a poster and some details about it. The film was made in a studio of two different film makers and they are: Studio Canal and Working Title Films. The merchandising would be things like posters. The placements in this film are: a 60’s sound track, competitions, Typhoo, a Roberts’s radio and downloadable wallpapers.

Bridget Jones's Diary

The film that is called Bridget Jones's Diary is produced by Working Title and it is produced by Tim Bevan, Jonathan Cavendish and Eric Fellher. It is a middle budget film that would have some of the above the line marketing, some examples of these marketing’s are trailers, posters and billboards. The viral marketing for this film will be on the maker’s home page working title / studio canal. The film was made in a studio of two different film makers and they are: Studio Canal and Working Title Films. The product placements in this film are: galaxies chocolate, sound track, wallpapers and galleries.

James Bond Quantum of Solace

This film is called James Bond Quantum of Solace. It is a high budget film, this means that it would have had all of the different ways to advertise it in above the line market and below the line market like: posters, trailers, billboards and so on... the viral market for this film is on a web page that is made just for Quantum of Solace. The product placements for this film are: Sony (TV’s, mp3 players, laptops, phones and so on), Aston Martin and other high class products. In this film 50% of the budget was spent on product promotion.

advertising statistics

The statistics that would have been used in the film 2012 would bee to get out the message that the film is coming to cinemas and the date, they would have shown this by advertising it e.g. posters. All of the different advertising would be easy to find like posters, billboards, trailers, press releases, merchandising and interviews, these are all above the line marketing the film will use all of these to send out the message quicker and easier, also they might use the below the line advertising and some of them are magazines, viral marketing, pod casts, internet, websites and press release. This sends out the message but it may not be as reliable because the audience will have to look on the internet for the film advertising.

The statistics that would have been used in the film the men who stare at goats would be to get the message out, but it would have to be cheapish because the company doesn’t have as much money as a Hollywood film, this is because they are founded by the company Universal. Some of the techniques that the company would use are magazines, viral marketing, pod casts, TV, internet, websites and press release. All of these BTL advertisement techniques will send out the message but some people will not have seen any of the advertising.

The statistics that would have been used in the film Bunny and the Bull would be to get the message out, but because the film is a low budget film they will not waste any money on advertising, the only advertisement that they would have is by the reputation of all the past films that they have made, also they would be known by recommendation. This means that this film wont have any advertising.

above the the line/ bellow the line

Above the line advertising is all about the advertising of a certain product like a film. Above the line advertising is when the product is very easy to see, like if the advert is on a bill board on a busy road, it will be easy to see and the audience wont have to find it them selves, this makes the advertisement above thee line. An example of this would be 2012, this is a movie that has lots of advertising and all of it would be above the market.

Bellow the line advertisement is all about the advertising g of a certain product like a film. Bellow the line advertising is when the product is hard to see, like if the advert is on TV or in a magazine, it will be hard to find + see and the audience will have to look for the advert, this makes it hard to see. An example of this would be Bunny and the bull this is a low budget film so they wont be wasting money on advertising.

this is England

I have been watching the film, ‘this is England’ by Warp Films. The film was directed by Shane Meadows. At the begging of the film there is an advertisement that shows the audience that the film was founded by the national lottery and also the British distributers.

The budget of the film is £1,500,000 the story board of this is England is all about the 1980’s, at the beginning of the film this is given away because there is a clip of a lot of different things that was common in the 80’s e.g. poverty, mining strike. Shane Meadows uses all of the same production practise techniques in this film as ‘Dead man’s shoes’. Some examples of Shane Meadows using the same production techniques are: the natural lighting, the setting of the film is real and not made, there are no famous actors like Simon Pegg / Nick Frost and so on... in the film the characters are not known and this is because of one of Shane Meadows rules for a low budget film, this rule is that the big stars cost too much to hire and they may not always suite the characters role in the film, the main character in the film is a young boy called Shaun is a boy who is bullied at school (he can be classed as the hero in the film looking for some friends) he is also instantly liked by the audience, this is because he is being picked on at school for his dad being dead by all of the other kids. He then finds some friends. This film is set in the 1980’s because it is in the time of the extreme political change.

The budget that has been used for this film would affect the film production because it would affect the target audience because they are limited to what they can get and what they can afford, e.g. the actors. The budget affects the target audience because the target audience range is getting lower, the target audience for this film is: ‘lower working class’ this is because the film has very bad language, drug references, alcohol, violence and so on... all of these points are related to the lower working class.

Shane meadows is using the same techniques throughout the films that he makes and this is because he can then keep the overall cost of the film/movie down making the risk of the film loosing money, this means that there is a less chance of loosing money, but there is also a smaller target for the target audience. As the films that Shane Meadows makes progresses through the budget keeps getting higher, this is shown when he started off making films for about £300,000 but now he has past the £1.5 million mark.

shane meadows warp films

The company ‘Warp Films’ is run by the director Shane Meadows, in the clip that we have watched Shane discusses what is better in about making a low budget film like ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.

In the clip that we watched Shane Meadows mentioned that there was a system in the low budget films, this means that they have a list of what they need to do and they then follow that list to keep the costs down.

Then Shane Meadows mentioned that in the film ‘This is England’ they had to look for a residential area that looked the most like a 70’s residential area, so that they didn’t have to make any scenes because they couldn’t afford to make anything, then they found a residential are in Newcastle which wasn’t modernised since the 70’s, this then saved they lots of money and it kept the cost down. Then also in the film ’This is England’ Shane mentioned that he had to rent out lots of old cars for the set and he then said that they were becoming too expensive to rent out, so he then bought some cars off of eBay around for £200 and they then used them in the scenes, also they repaired some because the cars didn’t work when they bought them.

Later on into the clip Shane Meadows then said that he got to know the actors more better because the crew (camera men ect...) were later to arrive than the actors and Shane, this meant that they would rehearse the scenes before the crew went to film the movie and that Shane Meadows would get to know the actors and this would also reduce the actors making errors whilst the cameras were still rolling, this also cuts the cost. Shane then went on to talk about it is not about the actors in the film, he said that if you have a well known actor in the film they may not suite the description of the character in the story, so he would employ actors that may not be well known, but they fit the description of the character perfectly, this is also lowering the cost.

Shane then mentioned that he preferred low budget films because there is less of a risk when making the film and when the film is in the movies, this is because if the audience do not like the film then it won’t be as big of a loss as a middle priced film.

Finally Shane mentioned that he used standard lights that are found in houses rather than studio spot lights, this was because they are cheaper and that they give the film a more realistic effect and it is like the audience are in that room with the actors because of the lighting.
