Above the line advertising is all about the advertising of a certain product like a film. Above the line advertising is when the product is very easy to see, like if the advert is on a bill board on a busy road, it will be easy to see and the audience wont have to find it them selves, this makes the advertisement above thee line. An example of this would be 2012, this is a movie that has lots of advertising and all of it would be above the market.

Bellow the line advertisement is all about the advertising g of a certain product like a film. Bellow the line advertising is when the product is hard to see, like if the advert is on TV or in a magazine, it will be hard to find + see and the audience will have to look for the advert, this makes it hard to see. An example of this would be Bunny and the bull this is a low budget film so they wont be wasting money on advertising.

I have been watching the film, ‘this is England’ by Warp Films. The film was directed by Shane Meadows. At the begging of the film there is an advertisement that shows the audience that the film was founded by the national lottery and also the British distributers.

The budget of the film is £1,500,000 the story board of this is England is all about the 1980’s, at the beginning of the film this is given away because there is a clip of a lot of different things that was common in the 80’s e.g. poverty, mining strike. Shane Meadows uses all of the same production practise techniques in this film as ‘Dead man’s shoes’. Some examples of Shane Meadows using the same production techniques are: the natural lighting, the setting of the film is real and not made, there are no famous actors like Simon Pegg / Nick Frost and so on... in the film the characters are not known and this is because of one of Shane Meadows rules for a low budget film, this rule is that the big stars cost too much to hire and they may not always suite the characters role in the film, the main character in the film is a young boy called Shaun is a boy who is bullied at school (he can be classed as the hero in the film looking for some friends) he is also instantly liked by the audience, this is because he is being picked on at school for his dad being dead by all of the other kids. He then finds some friends. This film is set in the 1980’s because it is in the time of the extreme political change.

The budget that has been used for this film would affect the film production because it would affect the target audience because they are limited to what they can get and what they can afford, e.g. the actors. The budget affects the target audience because the target audience range is getting lower, the target audience for this film is: ‘lower working class’ this is because the film has very bad language, drug references, alcohol, violence and so on... all of these points are related to the lower working class.

Shane meadows is using the same techniques throughout the films that he makes and this is because he can then keep the overall cost of the film/movie down making the risk of the film loosing money, this means that there is a less chance of loosing money, but there is also a smaller target for the target audience. As the films that Shane Meadows makes progresses through the budget keeps getting higher, this is shown when he started off making films for about £300,000 but now he has past the £1.5 million mark.

The company ‘Warp Films’ is run by the director Shane Meadows, in the clip that we have watched Shane discusses what is better in about making a low budget film like ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.

In the clip that we watched Shane Meadows mentioned that there was a system in the low budget films, this means that they have a list of what they need to do and they then follow that list to keep the costs down.

Then Shane Meadows mentioned that in the film ‘This is England’ they had to look for a residential area that looked the most like a 70’s residential area, so that they didn’t have to make any scenes because they couldn’t afford to make anything, then they found a residential are in Newcastle which wasn’t modernised since the 70’s, this then saved they lots of money and it kept the cost down. Then also in the film ’This is England’ Shane mentioned that he had to rent out lots of old cars for the set and he then said that they were becoming too expensive to rent out, so he then bought some cars off of eBay around for £200 and they then used them in the scenes, also they repaired some because the cars didn’t work when they bought them.

Later on into the clip Shane Meadows then said that he got to know the actors more better because the crew (camera men ect...) were later to arrive than the actors and Shane, this meant that they would rehearse the scenes before the crew went to film the movie and that Shane Meadows would get to know the actors and this would also reduce the actors making errors whilst the cameras were still rolling, this also cuts the cost. Shane then went on to talk about it is not about the actors in the film, he said that if you have a well known actor in the film they may not suite the description of the character in the story, so he would employ actors that may not be well known, but they fit the description of the character perfectly, this is also lowering the cost.

Shane then mentioned that he preferred low budget films because there is less of a risk when making the film and when the film is in the movies, this is because if the audience do not like the film then it won’t be as big of a loss as a middle priced film.

Finally Shane mentioned that he used standard lights that are found in houses rather than studio spot lights, this was because they are cheaper and that they give the film a more realistic effect and it is like the audience are in that room with the actors because of the lighting.
